Safety

Memodyne Side Effects: What Each Ingredient May Cause

Quick answer

Strong reactions to one Memodyne capsule are unlikely, and mild stomach trouble is the main effect seen in studies.

L-arginine can pull blood pressure or blood sugar too low alongside certain drugs, and people who just had a heart attack should skip it (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

See who should ask a doctor first.

Short version

What side effects can Memodyne cause?

Mild stomach trouble is the most likely one, and research saw even that at doses many times larger than a capsule.

Nobody has tested the Memodyne formula itself. Each ingredient has been studied, though, usually in grams.

By ingredient

Which Memodyne ingredient is most likely to cause a problem?

L-arginine, because its pull on blood vessels can stack with heart and diabetes medicines.

Main watch point

L-arginine

Mayo Clinic tells people fresh from a heart attack to avoid it; deaths may be more likely in that group (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

Low concern

L-citrulline

Nonathletes took up to 6 g a day for four weeks without trouble. Long-term safety is still an open question (NIH ODS, Exercise supplements).

Very low concern

Beta-alanine

The pre-workout tingle needs roughly 800 mg in one go. A capsule carries 40 mg (NIH ODS, Exercise supplements).

Count your total

Niacin

The adult ceiling from pills and fortified foods is 35 mg daily (NIH ODS, Niacin). Add 7.5 mg NE to your multivitamin's niacin.

On the bottle

What does the Memodyne label warn about?

Dose limits, pregnancy, age under 18 and known health conditions. It names no specific drug.

The flat Memodyne label with suggested use, caution and distributor text on the left and the Supplement Facts panel on the right
The caution block sits on the left of the wrap. It asks some groups to see a physician but names no medicines, which is why the interaction table below matters.

The printed caution reads: CAUTION: Do not exceed recommended dose. Pregnant or nursing mothers, children under the age of 18 and individuals with a known medical condition should consult a physician before using this or any dietary supplement. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use if safety seal is damaged or missing.

Blood pressure pills, nitrates and blood thinners go unmentioned, even with L-arginine on the panel. The whole wrap is typed out on the Supplement Facts page.

Medicines

Which medicines interact with Memodyne?

Mayo Clinic flags seven medicine groups for L-arginine. NIH adds two tuberculosis drugs for niacin.

1. Are you younger than 18?
2. Pregnant or nursing right now?
3. Recent heart attack, or do you take blood pressure, nitrate or erectile dysfunction medicine?
4. Taking a blood thinner, diabetes medicine or a potassium-sparing diuretic?
5. Has your memory worsened quickly, or do others notice changes?

Search mix-up

Why do Memodyne side effect searches show memantine?

The two names look alike, so search engines fill the results with research on a prescription drug.

Namenda is the brand name of memantine, a prescription drug for Alzheimer's disease. Type "Memodyne side effects" and the results often list memantine trials and case reports. Those reactions belong to that drug, its doses and its patients, not to a capsule of amino acids and niacin.

Two different products

Memodyne contains no memantine and cannot stand in for it. Anyone on memantine who adds the supplement brings in the L-arginine questions above. Never stop or change a dose on your own.

Our post on lookalike names sorts out Melodyne too.

Know the signs

How can you tell if your pressure or sugar has dropped?

Both often start with dizziness or weakness. These are general signs, not a test for Memodyne.

Blood pressure

Pressure running low

  • A woozy, lightheaded feeling on rising from a chair or bed
  • Near-fainting or blacking out
  • Blurred eyesight
  • Queasiness
  • Unusual tiredness
Blood sugar

Sugar running low

  • Shaky hands
  • Sweating, clammy skin
  • A racing heartbeat
  • Sudden hunger or crankiness
  • Muddled thinking

On pressure or diabetes medicine? Check your readings and call your doctor if these appear.

Stop and ask

When should you stop Memodyne?

Put the bottle aside and call your doctor if any of these happen.

  • Hives, a rash, swollen lips or face, or wheezing
  • Asthma flaring after you start
  • Diarrhea, cramps or bloating that lasts beyond a few days
  • Dizzy spells, or home readings trending down
  • A sudden hot, painful, swollen joint, which can be gout
  • New or heavier bruising or bleeding
  • A positive pregnancy test

Dropping the supplement is up to you; a prescription is your doctor's call. Refund steps are in the guarantee terms.

Emergency

Which symptoms need 911, not a supplement check?

Call 911 right away

Sudden numbness or weakness, often on one side of the body. Sudden confusion or slurred, garbled speech. Sudden trouble seeing or walking. A sudden, severe headache. These can mean a stroke (CDC, Stroke signs), and every minute counts.

Reporting

Where can you file a report about a Memodyne reaction?

With your doctor first, then with the FDA, so the event is on record.

  1. Get checked

Anything beyond mild stomach upset deserves a doctor or urgent care visit. Take the bottle with you.

  2. Write it down

Lot number, start date, symptoms, and every other product you took that week.

  3. Tell FDA MedWatch

The FDA takes supplement reaction reports from the public through its MedWatch online form or at 1-800-FDA-1088. Doctors can send one too.

Let the order desk at +1 (302) 200-3480 know too.

FAQ

Memodyne side effect questions

Does Memodyne have side effects?

It can, though no study measured them for the formula. Its ingredients caused gut upset and lower blood pressure, mostly at gram doses (NIH ODS, Exercise supplements) (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). A capsule holds milligrams, so mild effects or none are most likely.

Can Memodyne cause diarrhea or an upset stomach?

Possibly, though it is unlikely at one capsule. Mayo Clinic lists nausea, belly pain, diarrhea and bloating for L-arginine (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine), and citrulline bothered some weightlifters at 8 g (NIH ODS, Exercise supplements). If loose stools last several days, set the capsule aside and call your doctor.

Is Memodyne safe with a blood thinner like warfarin?

Ask your prescriber before combining them. Mayo Clinic says L-arginine with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may raise bleeding risk (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). The Memodyne label is silent on this, so let the doctor decide.

Can I take Memodyne with Viagra or nitroglycerin?

Only with a doctor's OK. Per Mayo Clinic, L-arginine plus sildenafil, or plus nitrates for chest pain, can send blood pressure too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

Does the niacin in Memodyne cause flushing?

Flushing is unlikely. Warm, red skin from niacin starts around 30-50 mg of nicotinic acid, and a capsule lists 7.5 mg NE (NIH ODS, Niacin). The niacin type is not named, so count it with any B-complex or multivitamin you already use.

Are Memodyne side effects the same as memantine side effects?

No. Memantine (Namenda) is a dementia prescription, and its side-effect data come from trials of that medicine. Memodyne is a supplement of amino acids, niacin and calcium.

Can Memodyne lower blood sugar?

It could add to diabetes medicine. Mayo Clinic says L-arginine taken with glucose-lowering drugs could drag glucose too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). If you use insulin or diabetes tablets, check with your doctor first and test more often during the first weeks.
